The Lost Kingdom of Elmet; an illustrated talk

Date: Wednesday 26th July 2017

Time: 7.30

Venue: Rothwell Community Hub, Marsh Street, Rothwell, Leeds, LS26 0AE

The Kingdom of Elmet was one of many small principalities which sprang up after the Roman armies withdrew from Britain. It covered the area which is now South and West Yorkshire and before its collapse in the early 600s it was a buffer between the two great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. This talk looks at people and places in the past to shed light on an almost forgotten part of regional history.

Speaker: Dave Weldrake

Cost: Free to SLA members, £4 to non-members

The talk is one of series events organized by South Leeds Archaeology.

On the 14th of October I shall be talking to the Hebden Bridge Local History Society about the lost Kingdom of Elmet. This was a small British Kingdom which emerged after the collapse of Roman rule in the area which is now West Yorkshire. Only a few tantalizing scraps of evidence have survived but a close examination can throw some light onto this shadowy part of northern history.

Venue: Methodist Church, Bridge Lanes, Hebden Bridge HX7 6EU

Start time: 7.30 pm

Cost: £3
