Two of the more visible elements of 18th and 19th-century village administration were the village wells and the village pinfold. A source of clean water was clearly important to the inhabitants as was a place where they could impound stray animals to prevent damage to growing crops. In some West Yorkshire villages, the two can still be found together, interesting survivals of bygone village pride.
